Principals Welcome

Kia Ora and welcome to Riverton Primary School.

E hiahia ana ahau ki te whakaatu i te rohe o Oraka Aparima me te hapori.

I would like to acknowledge the Riverton Community and the lands that surround us.

“We Open our Doors with Aroha,” is the nucleus of the school culture. Children learn in a supportive, caring environment, which encourages responsibility for self monitoring appropriate learning and social behaviour.

We are currently operating 6 innovative classrooms with a dynamic and highly collaborative teaching team of passionate educators and support staff. We aim to make our school as happy and as rewarding as possible for all our children, to enable the best possible 21st century learning.

Each child’s learning pathway is unique and we work in close partnership with home to help understand and develop the whole child. We want our learners (children and teachers) to show initiative and to have passion for their own learning in a safe and happy social environment that is also set against ‘a backdrop’ of developing an appreciation of our multi-cultural heritage.

Our students are confident, able to make good decisions and are actively encouraged to try a wide range of sport, learning and cultural activities. Cultural opportunities include a bilingual class, Kapahaka, working closely with our local marae.

We promote an open family environment and invite you to visit us so you can see the school in action for yourself. I am happy to answer any questions you may have and to show you around. Riverton Primary School is a special place!

Our students frequently spend time enjoying the local environment. One of our favourite outdoor activities for our Yr 5 – 6 children is the ROX programme. Each fortnight on a Friday children go out into the environment with a teacher and one other staff member to do a variety of activities in the wild. These range from bush walks, mountain biking, white baiting, to catch crawlies. Bush safety and conservation are all part of the programme as well as working together to problem solve.

There is a major emphasis on self discipline, not punishment, restorative practice, accepting responsibility for unacceptable behaviour, shared decision making when sorting out how to ‘fix’ disagreements or wrong doing, and the need to leave the student’s dignity intact.

Relationship building between teachers and children is viewed as a major factor in promoting positive attitudes to learning and managing self, with a proud tradition and heritage of providing a special environment that children feel part of in their primary years of education.

We have introduced our new values programme CARE. C - Community, A - Aroha, R - Resilience, E - Engagement. We have look at how the children can CARE in all environments around the school. It encourages positive behaviour for their learning and the people who learn beside them. And build positive relationships with those who are responsible for their learning.

Nga mihi nui,
Tim Page
